2023-2024 Slide Decks for Friday Lectures

PDFs of the presentations given to fellows this year, organized by Topic below:

Acute Coronary Syndrome/Ischemic Heart Disease

Introduction to Cath (Larry Dean 7/7/23) - amazing slide deck introducing the new fellow to the Cath Lab given by one of the biggest legends in Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Larry Dean. This covers everything from the pre-procedural evaluation, vascular access, catheter selection, cath views, and post-procedure care.

Advanced Coronary Angiography, Catheter Selection, Valve Fluoroscopy, & Anomalous Coronaries (Creighton Don, 7/7/2023) - this was a great overview of the advanced cath views and how to adjust your camera angle to improve images and reduce overlap. Also a good review of catheter selection and troubleshooting.

Coronary hemodynamics (Jake Doll 7/28/23) - a deep dive into the basis of FFR and iFR and the trials that support their use to guide re-vascularization (FAME1, FAME2, RIPCORD 2, FLOWER MI), overall resulting in fewer PCI procedures and composite MACE.

STEMI recognition (Kenta Nakamura, 8/4/23) - great slide deck with lots of cool patient cases and coronary angiograms. This is a link to the actual powerpoint so you can watch the vidoes! PDF version here.

Cardiac Rehab (Ninel Hovnanians, 3/2024) - informative slide deck demystifying cardiac rehab! Indications and who to refer, explanation of the wrap around services available, and impressive cardiovascular outcomes.

Femoral complications - Dave Elison

Viability (Dr. Jake Doll)

Heart Failure/Transplant

Introduction to Transplant & On Call Emergencies (April Stempien-Otero, 7/14/23) - this was a fantastic into talk on ACR and AMR grading, how we evaluate for rejection and treat it, common infections post-transplant, and transplant vasculopathy.

Post-Transplant Management (Elina Minami, 7/14/23) - very detailed and wonderful overview of the immediate post operative management of transplant patients, including primary graft dysfunction, arrhythmias, and acute rejection. The end of the talk has slides that we didn’t have time to cover, about chronic immunosuppression, infection and malignancy, and CAV surveillance.

Heart Transplant Process (Lisa Guertin, 7/21/23) - Lisa helps demystify the transplant process! She wonderfully explains the different OPO regions, how donor suitability is assessed, UNOS transplant statuses, how organs are accepted, and also briefly discusses the pre-transplant care planning.

Pharmacologic Management of Heart Failure (Wayne Levy 8/4/23) - incredible whirlwind of some of the most important clinical trials that support the pillars of heart failure management. Will be helpful to refer back to this one for sure!

Abiomed Impella CP and 5.5 PDF - FYI you may need to create your own account to see the material on their website

Post Transplant Care: Mole Hill or Mountain (Dr. Kevin O’brien)

Cardio-Oncology (Dr. Richard Cheng)

VA ECMO (Dr. Janelle Budulak)

Diabetes drugs in Heart Failure (SGLT-2 and GLP1, Dr. Subramanian) - fantastic talk from endocrinology regarding the use of diabetes drugs in heart failure

Echocardiography & Imaging

Introduction to TTE (Rose Freeman, 7/7/23) - broad overview of TTE including basic principles, standard views, contrast imaging, and doppler!

Introduction to TEE (Rose Freeman, 7/7/23) - super helpful talk on how to systematically approach TEE. Reviews pre-procedural evaluation, technique of probe insertion, and the standard views as recommended by ASE.

Intro to Cardiac CT (Kelley Branch, 7/13/2023) - In Kelley’s words, CT is the tube of triage, treatment, and truth. Wonderful summary on clinical applications of cardiac CT and when to consider ordering a cardiac CT based on recent Chest Pain Guidelines. Exciting that CTA FFR is coming soon to UW!

Echo Emergencies (Jim Kirkpatrick, 8/4/23) - Practical tips and examples of echo emergencies overnight (including pericardial effusion/tamponade, LVAD, PE and “RV strain”, flail mitral valve leaflet).

Artifacts in Nuclear Cardiology (Dr Slim) - Upcoming talk later this year

Interpretation of Nuclear Studies (Effie Andrikopoulou)

Approach to Congenital Echo (Dr. Jill Steiner)

electrophysiology

Intro to Device Interrogations (Jordan Prutkin, 7/28/23) - great talk to refer back to when on the EP service and learning to interrogate devices!! Great overview of different pacing modes and terminology (threshold, capture, sensing, sensitivity, impedance).

EP Emergencies (Dr. Neal Chatterjee) - high yield talk on what to do when called about an EP emergency! Remember to think of verapamil for fascicular VT (RBBB, superior axis in a young patient!), reach for amiodarone/lidocaine for monomorphic VT (coronary angiogram rarely indicated), consider propranolol > metoprolol for MMVT, quinidine for PVC induced PMVT and make sure to rule out ischemia

Adult Congenital Heart DIsease

Fontan and Complications (Jill Steiner) - an excellent talk on what is a Fontan, what are the staged procedures leading to a Fontan, and what are the complications we should think about - all explained here!

Simple Congenital Lesions (Dr. Krieger) - Everything you need to know about ASD, VSD, PDA, coarctation, bicuspid aortic valves, and sub aortic membrane, explained by our one and only Dr. Krieger
